Oh, and you’ll probably run out of phone memory because you’ll take countless photos. Be careful, bears call this area home, so don’t stray too far from your guide! Along the Transfăgărășan, you’ll see several waterfalls and pass through multiple tunnels, cross the Făgăraș Mountains Alpine Gulf Nature Reserve, pass by the glacial Bâlea Lake, and then enjoy a thrilling descent along breathtaking switchbacks.
Bâlea Waterfall → Also called the Urlătoarea Bâlei, it is one of Romania’s most beautiful and tallest tiered waterfalls, with a 60-meter drop. Along the route to the waterfall, your eyes will be delighted by the stunning landscapes offered by the local vegetation and wildlife.
Capra Waterfall → An impressive waterfall located in the Făgăraș Mountains, known for its natural beauty and spectacular surroundings.
Bâlea Lake → The most popular tourist attraction on the Transfăgărășan. Bâlea Lake is a glacial lake over 11 meters deep, and the surrounding area has been declared a scientific reserve. Located at an altitude of 2,034 meters, it is recognized as a natural monument, considered one of Romania’s most beautiful and largest glacial lakes. Near the lake, there is a viewpoint from which visitors can admire the grandeur of the Transfăgărășan, looking toward Sibiu.
Vidraru Dam → The colossal structure of the entire hydroelectric system, with a height of 166.6 meters and a crest length of 306 meters. Upon completion, Vidraru Dam ranked 5th in Europe and 9th worldwide. Few know, but the dam was designed to last at least 100 years and to withstand major earthquakes.
Rupea Medieval Fortress → One of the oldest fortifications in Romania, Rupea Fortress is a must-see for tourists eager to explore medieval history. The Gate Tower, Servants’ Tower, and Bacon Tower are just a few of the important structures that give the site its character. For a remarkable panorama, climb up to the small house at the top.
Sighișoara → Romania’s most colorful city → A small city that can fascinate any history lover, especially due to the Dracula legend. The buildings have unique beauty, with pastel colors mostly unchanged since construction, attracting visitors with their architecture and diversity. In the past, trade took place in the Citadel Square; today, it’s perfect for strolling and relaxing. On the way to the Clock Tower, you can see on the right the “House with the Deer” and “Vlad Dracul House.” Walking along Strada Școlii, you’ll find countless souvenir shops to remind you at home of the “Medieval Pearl of Romania.”
Sibiu → Perfect for a relaxing evening when staying near the Old Town, where you feel safe, as someone seems to watch over you from above! Look up and you’ll notice the rooftops silently observing you. Cobblestone streets, narrow passages, churches forgotten by time, towers, and defensive walls all await discovery in Sibiu’s historic center. Among all the attractions, the Big Square (Piața Mare), the Small Square (Piața Mică), and Huet Square stand out. Here, you’ll hear both true stories and playful myths – that’s the charm of crossing the Bridge of Lies!
Curtea de Argeș Monastery → The ballad “Monastery of Argeș” tells how Master Manole built his own wife into the construction. The mysterious way in which the daytime work collapsed overnight led Manole to place his soul into this fortress. He dreamed that sacrificing his wife would make the construction endure. From that night onward, the building no longer fell, the sacrifice lifting the curse that had plagued the site.
